The festive season is upon us and for many, that means welcoming friends and family into our homes. Creating a cosy, welcoming bedroom is the ultimate way to make your guests feel pampered and loved. Here are my top tips for preparing the perfect guest retreat this holiday season:
1. Spruce Up the Cushions
Comfort is key and plays a major part in creating an inviting space - nothing says “sink in and relax” like a bed dressed with plump, cosy cushions. Mix and match textures, patterns and sizes for a touch of luxury and don’t be shy about layering them for maximum snugness. You can never have enough cushions; it only makes for extra comfort whilst lolling around over the festive period.
2. Layer Up the Blankets
Layering blankets is the real secret to making a bed that beckons. Add quilts or throws in soft, warm fabrics to create the ultimate cocoon for your guests. The more layers, the cosier the experience - perfect for chilly winter nights and vital in older houses. I suggest layering the quilts up, then guests can remove them according to how hot/cold they get.
3. Add Candles in Natural Scents
A flickering candle in a subtle, natural scent like fig will create a soothing atmosphere. Choose one signature scent for your home so guests associate that fragrance with their wonderful stay. It’s the perfect way to evoke memories long after they leave. Plus, candles add that all-important low, glowy lighting for a truly relaxing vibe.
4. Provide Glasses and Carafes of Water
A thoughtful touch is placing a carafe and glasses by the bedside. Your guests won’t need to stumble to the kitchen if they get thirsty in the night - we have all been when we would do anything to not to have to get out of bed for some water! It’s these little details that make a difference.
5. Stock the Drawers with Essentials
Be a holiday lifesaver by keeping the essentials close at hand. Fill a drawer with Barroca, paracetamol and other handy items to help your guests survive late nights and festive indulgence. They'll thank you for this post-party season survival kit!
6. Spritz the Sheets with Lavender Spray
Nothing says luxury like freshly made beds that smell divine. Good quality linen with a light spritz of lavender spray will have your guests feeling calm and relaxed as they drift off to sleep.
7. Add Hot Water Bottles
For an extra touch of warmth and to really go the 'extra mile', pop a hot water bottle into the bed before your guests turn in. It’s a simple gesture that makes all the difference on a frosty evening.
8. Stock the Shelves with Novels and Magazines
Create a mini library for your guests. Stock the room with a few novels, magazines, or even a puzzle book so they have something to enjoy during downtime. It’s these thoughtful extras that make their stay feel special.
9. A Little Choccy Treat on the Pillow
Turn your guest room into a five-star experience by placing a chocolate treat on the pillow. It’s a small luxury that will make them feel utterly spoiled—hotel vibes, but better!
10. Add a Feather Mattress Topper
If you really want to up the comfort factor, invest in a feather mattress topper. My husband describes ours as “sleeping on a cloud,” and it’s guaranteed to leave your guests refreshed and well-rested.
11. Supply Cotton Eye Masks and Ear Plugs
Light sleepers will appreciate a cotton eye mask and ear plugs on their bedside table. To really give the extra extra experience then add a miniature kettle, mugs and some dreamy tea for a late-night or early-morning cuppa.
Go All Out for Your Loved Ones
The holidays are a time for making memories and what better way to do so than by creating a guest bedroom that’s a haven of comfort and warmth? Whether it’s thoughtful little touches like chocolate on the pillow or practical gestures like stocking the drawers, these details will ensure your guests have an unforgettable stay.
This Christmas, let your loved ones feel like they’re at a boutique hotel - or perhaps even better than one! 💫
