Last week, I had the absolute privilege of teaching a gathered lampshade workshop at Thyme, an elegant estate nestled in the heart of the Cotswolds. While the workshop was a joy, I couldn’t resist indulging in a little vintage textile hunting during my stay. The Cotswolds is famous for its rolling countryside, honey-hued villages and rich history, but it also happens to be a treasure trove for vintage lovers like myself. It’s filled with charming antique shops and hidden gems that offer some of the most exquisite vintage fabrics and homewares.
If you’re like me and love the thrill of discovering unique treasures with history and character, the Cotswolds won’t disappoint. Here’s a little recap of my unforgettable stay at Thyme, as well as some of the best places I visited for vintage treasures!
A Dreamy Stay at Thyme: The Perfect Launchpad
First things first, I simply have to share with you my special experience at Thyme. This countryside retreat is beyond incredible—an absolute oasis of comfort, style, and tranquility. My room was so inviting; with soft linens and thoughtful touches that made it one of the most comfortable stays I’ve ever had. It’s the kind of place where you wake up fully refreshed and ready to take on the world. My room was decorated so beautifully with the new fabrics from the cutting garden collection. You must also visit their boutique, which is absolutely stunning and packed full of many treats inspired by the English garden.
The food at Thyme is a true highlight. Every meal felt like a culinary celebration of fresh, local ingredients and the flavours were simply unforgettable. I could hardly tear myself away from the kitchen garden and the restaurant’s stunning menu - but of course, the thrill of sharing my passion for lampshade making and vintage textiles was calling. Speaking of recommendations, if you’re ever in the area, you must visit The Double Red Duke for another unforgettable meal. Their dishes are just divine!
The Vintage Textile Hunt: A Cotswold Treasure Trove
When it comes to vintage textiles, the Cotswolds offers more than just rolling hills and picture-perfect villages - it’s a goldmine of shops that cater to those with a passion for history and design. I found myself drawn to some of the most charming and unique antique stores during my stay. Here are the highlights from my vintage textile hunt:
1. Station Mill Antiques & Interiors – Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire
This was one of my first stops, and it didn’t disappoint. Station Mill Antiques is a massive, two-story space filled with an eclectic mix of antiques and vintage finds. I was in heaven as I browsed through a collection of linens, throws, and antique fabrics. There’s something so special about touching textiles that have a story; hand-embroidered tablecloths, delicate lace and even some French linen caught my eye, along with vintage chintz.....just all so inspiring. If you're looking for unique homewares or vintage fabrics to inspire your next project, Station Mill is a must-visit.
2. Tetbury: A Vintage Haven
If there’s one town in the Cotswolds that deserves a special mention for vintage lovers, it’s Tetbury. Known for its high-end antique shops and historical charm, Tetbury is a treasure trove of finds. I couldn’t miss Lorfords Antiques - a real gem where I found some stunning vintage textiles. Their collection is beautifully curated, with rare fabrics and elegant pieces that are ideal for both collectors and crafters. From tapestries to linens, I can assure you textile lovers that you won’t be disappointed.
I also popped into Brownrigg, another absolute favorite. Brownrigg has an eye for quality and character, and their selection of antique and vintage homewares is perfect for anyone looking to add a bit of history to their space. The textiles here were exquisite - think rich colors, beautiful prints and fabrics with a touch of grandeur. I was especially drawn to the framed textiles.
Trilogie Antiques is another stop worth mentioning in Tetbury. Their style is effortlessly chic, offering an array of French and European textiles and antiques. I spent a good hour just absorbing the atmosphere of the shop and admiring the fine details in the display pieces.
3. Burford Garden Centre: More Than Just Plants
I’ve always had a soft spot for Burford Garden Centre, but did you know it’s also an absolute gem for unique homewares and textiles? Amidst the beautiful plants and garden essentials, you’ll find a curated selection of décor, furniture and even textiles that are both modern and vintage inspired. The mix of old and new made it hard to resist picking up a few things for my own home. If you’re a fan of blending contemporary style with vintage charm, then this place is for you.
Why I Love the Hunt
The thrill of searching for vintage textiles is not just about finding beautiful fabrics, it’s about the stories woven into each piece. There’s something magical about imagining where a piece of lace or a hand-stitched quilt may have come from, who made it and how it was used. Whether it’s a set of embroidered napkins or a Victorian-era tapestry, each find adds richness and history to my creative work and my home.
In the Cotswolds, vintage textile hunting is elevated by the breathtaking surroundings and the passion of the shopkeepers who curate their collections so carefully. The region’s deep connection to traditional crafts and textiles means you can often uncover some truly special pieces that you won’t find anywhere else.
A Perfect Cotswold Adventure
While I could have spent all my time just soaking up the luxury of Thyme, I’m so glad I took the time to explore the local shops and immerse myself in the world of vintage textiles. Between the stunning accommodations, the incredible food and the delightful vintage finds, my stay in the Cotswolds was unforgettable.
If you ever find yourself in the Cotswolds, I highly recommend carving out some time for a vintage hunt of your own. Whilst you’re at it, treat yourself to a stay at Thyme - I guarantee it’ll be the most comfortable, rejuvenating experience and the perfect base for all your adventures in this beautiful part of the world.
Happy hunting!
